Borderline Personality Disorder Meetings
June 15, 2004
The interest among researchers in attending the Borderline
Personality Disorder treatment think tank has been unexpectedly strong -- and because so many of those who wanted to come
are bright and able junior researchers who are our future, this interest has
been most welcome, but we have now reached (indeed, slightly exceeded)
capacity. So, except for two special junior researchers who have been in
communication with me about attending if they can arrange support, this
meeting is closed to new registrations. We will be working with those
attending the think tank to facilitate the dissemination of presentations
and discussions there to the larger BPD research community.
Two Borderline Personality Research Foundation - NIMH meetings are in the
works for early in 2005. One will address issues around the phenotype. The
other will be a launch pad for a mentoring program for junior investigators
who are viable applicants for NIMH grants for BPD research.. (With benefit
of the ready assistance of a cadre of senior BPD treatment researchers, we
will be launching this mentoring effort for search at the think tank.)
June 3, 2004
NIMH sponsors the annual New Clinical Drug Evaluation Unit (NCDEU) meeting.
Borderline PD has not yet made it as an explicit focus at NCDEU, but two
treatment development sessions yesterday at this year's NCDEU meeting in
Phoenix, Arizona, are close and relevant. These two sessions (see below)
focused on impulsivity; one with a clinical treatment focus, the other
drawing on basic research.
Emil Coccaro, who is well known to the borderline pd research community, was
a presenter. James Blair of the NIMH intramural program, who presented at
the second New Directions in Borderline Personality Research at the University of Minnesota, was also a presenter. William Potter of Eli Lilly
was a participant in both panels.
Pharmacological treatment opportunities and issues will be one of the focuses at NIMH's international think tank July 8- 11 for the more effective
treatment of borderline pd.
